USMCA Renewal Vital for 2026

The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is up for review in summer 2026, and KY Corn urges all three parties to confirm continuation of the agreement.

USMCA is a critical trade agreement for the United States corn export market, with about 40 percent of total corn exports going to Mexico and 35 percent of ethanol exports going to Canada. USMCA streamlined these exports, and created safeguards that have already been at work for corn farmers in the U.S.

In December 2024, Mexico officially repealed its 2023 decree to ban genetically modified (GM) corn imports from the United States after a ruling from a dispute panel showed this ban violated USMCA. Without USMCA, the review and dispute process would not have been in place to protect this key market for Kentucky corn growers.

USMCA is a 16-year agreement which started in July of 2020 that also has a formal review between each nation every 6 years. July of 2026 will be the first review period, and the renewal of the agreement is as important for rural and farming communities and agriculture exports as ever.

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) is part of a coalition for 2026 supporting the extension of USMCA, with multiple initiatives to ensure the voice of our farmers and undeniable benefits of USMCA are heard in Washington. NCGA recently conducted well-attended Capitol Hill briefings on the major impact of USMCA on corn exports.

This coalition, with the engagement from Kentucky farmers and KY Corn, will play a critical role in the discussions leading up to the joint review on renewal of USMCA in 2026.
