KyCorn Participates in Floyds Fork Agriculture Stakeholders Meeting

Dale Booth, Floyds Fork Watershed Coordinator, addressed the stakeholders.

Dale Booth, Floyds Fork Watershed Coordinator, addressed the stakeholders.

KyCorn Executive Director Laura Knoth attended an agriculture stakeholders meeting yesterday for the Floyds Fork watershed and was pleased with what she had to hear.

The goals of the meeting were to raise public awareness of positive steps that agriculture is taking to protect water quality, improve compliance with the Ag Water Quality Plan, educate producers about the impacts of runoff pollution and the solutions available through cost share and grant programs, and provide incentives to producers to implement BMPs to reduce runoff pollution.

“It’s important for agriculture to stay engaged in the Division of Water’s process to establish its first TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) pertaining to nutrients,” said Knoth. “The issue is one that entire communities must address together, and we want to ensure our farmers voices are heard.”

One proposal of note is that the Kentucky Division of Water is suggesting a voluntary Ky Excel recognition program to showcase the environmentally protective practices farmers are using in the watershed. Participants also saw several videos produced by the University of Kentucky that showcased how farmers were implementing BMPs on their farms for the Ag Water Quality Act.

We are posting those on our social media channels this week.
